What happens when the instructions disappear?
The Kim Thompson Method offers interest-led challenges for children aged 5 to 15, built on what they already love, with the difficulty left in.
Three ways in: book a bespoke briefing, try the framework yourself by trying out some briefs in the Starter Pack, or download the free Masterplan to understand the method.
The Bespoke Briefing
Traditional schooling trains kids to manage a rubric. The Kim Thompson Method trains them to manage reality.
If your child brings home straight A’s and completes every worksheet on time, they have mastered a critical skill: high-level focus and efficiency under a clear script.
But a syllabus is a guided path. True independence happens when the template disappears.
When the modern landscape shifts and pre-written scripts are no longer provided, a child who only knows how to execute orders faces a sudden, silent wall. They possess the answers, but not the raw capability to handle ambiguity.
Run the micro-test that matches your child's age:
-
Give them a task with half the instructions missing: "Organize this kitchen shelf to fit the new groceries, but we are out of boxes. Figure something out."
If they freeze, refuse to move, or repeatedly ask "Is this right?" before trying, they are looking for permission instead of looking at the problem.
A truly independent child doesn't wait for a box or a template. They will hunt through the house on their own, grab an empty shoebox, flip a plastic mixing bowl upside down, or stack the jars into an unstable pyramid just to test the boundaries of the physical space. -
The next time a physical item arrives that your child begged you to buy- like a piece of room furniture, a baking kit, or a model set, hand them the box unopened and tell them to put it together.
They might troubleshoot a video game glitch for hours to get their screen time back, but look at what happens when the labor is analog.
They won't just sit there and solve it. Within five minutes, they will be whining, complaining, and begging you to help them. They are highly efficient at outsourcing the hard parts to you so they can stay inside their comfort zone.
If their automatic reflex to real-world friction is to make you do it for them, they cannot handle a curveball without an adult rescue. -
Gently counter a position or school fact they bring home- whether they are talking about school phone rules, history class, or something they saw online.
Just throw a calm wrench in it by saying: "I look at it differently. I think that misses the bigger picture."
If they instantly drop it, nod politely, or shut down just to please you, they are simply yielding to your authority. In a traditional home, we call that respect. In the modern economy, we call it compliance.
If your child cannot confidently defend their own logic against a gentle challenge from a parent, they will never have the presence to stand up for a project in a room full of adults.
They are being trained to take orders in a world that only rewards the people who make the decisions.
Secure the Framework
I execute a private 60-minute strategy call to map your specific protocol, and engineer a custom, unscripted challenge built around what your child already cares about.
They will hit roadblocks, manage resources, and face real external friction until they build the internal ownership to stop looking over at you for approval.

The three steps to building an independent thinker at home, in the hours you already have. Not another screen to hand them instead. Nothing to buy, nothing to book.
Who this is for:
Your kid is somewhere between 5 and 15, and you're the one making the parenting calls day to day.
You're tired of managing a schedule instead of raising a person.
You're willing to let your kid be uncomfortable, bored, or a little annoyed with you, because you can see what's on the other side of that.
You want a plan you can run this week, not a pep talk.
Where it doesn't work:
If you want someone else to fix your kid while you stay out of it. This isn't a drop-off service. You're the one running the moves.
If your child has a diagnosed condition that needs coordinated clinical care. This method works alongside a therapist or specialist, not instead of one.
If your goal is zero friction. The whole approach is built on productive discomfort. If that's not something you're ready to sit with yet, start with the free Masterplan and come back when you are.
If you're looking for a quick fix. This is a system you run over weeks, not a switch you flip in a day.
